Time for that deep discussion of the week from Australia - this time I've decided to go with schooling!

How was your school life for you? Did it rock? Did it suck? Do you wish you tried harder? Did you try too hard?

Mine: I loved primary school. When I was young it was great times - wasn't popular but wasn't hated either - was kind of in the middle group. Was always afraid of getting in trouble back then - would rather just work and get good grades. Year 7 (the year before high school) was probably the best year. Once I hit high school - s*** started getting real. I was pretty good through til year 10. Tried hard. Got good grades. But once year 10 hit - ended up missing classes - getting bullied by a few of the older kids and letting it get to me. Tried to get back into it in year 11 - which I did for one class - but ended up leaving halfway through year 12 (final year in Australia).

I miss school - Life was so much easier then, and I wish I listened to my parents into loving those years as the best of my life - since adult life is hard. I wish I tried harder because I know I could have actually been so much more successful academically than what I am now.

EDIT: Edited to add poll.

I really hated school...

I was an everyman when it came to popularity, so I didn't mind that, but I'm also dyspraxic, so the written work was really, really hard on me and I got burnt out quickly after summer ended, and during the second semester of my Senior Year, I felt like I was going insane due to the stress. I ended up graduating High School, but College is out of the question.

I do want to be an independent adult, but that WILL take time... I just turned 20, so I can still work toward it for a while, and I have a plan for that, as well as goals... These things are much more important to me than academia, anyway.

Crazy Awesome Legend

I loved primary school. It felt very free and relaxed. The first two years of secondary school were similar but then all the exams came up and everyone was busy with that for the next three years. I wish I'd had the social skills at the time to mix with regular people more. Instead I spent the last three years of school with a group of autistic students getting up to all kinds of mayhem. That was a mistake I deeply regret. I should have hung out with my tutor group and made real friends. Not dicked around with a bunch of a***** autistics. They were vile human beings except for two.

Now that you mentioned it, I don't recall anything positive in grade school.

School for the most part was always s*it for me. I was the kinda guy who wasn't interested in anything that was going on in class and so my marks always ended up like crap. Gym class was no different seeing as I flopped in every sport their was and somehow managed to be the laughing stock of the class with my patheticness in everything. I was pretty much like those sterotypical kids you see on those TV shows who get picked last on the dodgeball team and everyone would have to moan and groan when I was on their team. Lastly, my social life also sucked a** for me. Whenever I had a decent amount of friends, they would become d***ish towards the end of the school year and started treating me like a joke. Also, I seemed to be the perfect target for Bullying in Middle School as well as some of early High School. No wonder I became so jaded and introverted.

I suppose the only decent part of school was pre-4th grade when things were relatively easy and easygoing. Other than that, school was a drag for me and Good Ridance it's over.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Yeah for me primary school was a blast, I was always a shy kid but had a couple of friends and could kind of mingle with them so it was fun.

Then I hit highschool and my undiagnosed autism kicked in so after a couple of lax years suddenly it hit me that there are loads more people and that I have to talk to them and exams etc etc, didn't realize why until after leaving school but that's why I had insomnia.

Attendance rate was like 44% or something, it's a miracle I passed all my exams.

So it just suddenly became hellish for me, especially since classes were split up and everyone chose different things so the one friend I had wouldn't always be in the same lesson leaving me the isolated weird kid.

At least in Britain they really don't prepare you for how different high school is, not sure if it happens everywhere but we went to the high school for two weeks before actually finishing primary, just for like an induction but it in no way got across what it would be like in future with exams. Parents can't really help much since everything changes every few years so they have even less of a clue

Primary School was great for me, everything felt chill and relaxed, and I have pretty much no memories of times in which I was stressed or unhappy. Ah, child wonder and faith in the world, how I miss thee. Middle school was ok-ish, I started getting a little more introvert and started to develop my own identity, as I wanted to be different from everyone else but not stand out too much. Just wanted to become myself, I guess, which backfired in High School. My classmates pretty much gave me hell for whatever I'd do lol.

Changed classmates though because my class was so terrible, and now High School is amazing. Just a blast to hang out with everybody.

Primary school was awesome for me too, seemed like my creativity was embraced more than shot down. The teachers really got to know us students well (I assume because there's less of them than in highschool or sutin), and they managed to make people think.

At intermediate and highschool, all of the above was immediately shot down. Memorizing facts was deemed far more important than critical thinking, and overall I felt like we were treated like sheep in the system. It was also so messy that I had to teach the computing class for half a year, because the school could only find an English teacher to teach it.

Then I hit tertiary education, and everything was well again.

Given the option, I'd never go back to highschool. The teachers were all really nice people, but the learning itself was bad and should feel bad. I like being able to do my own thing, and I like working.

Good luck mate - And I can tell you you're already laps over some people who don't want their independence.

To everyone:
What could have made your schooling better? Seems most of us did pretty well in primary school but high school rolled around like a big s*** storm?

My teachers and that weren't bad - and we were pretty much exposed to all topics in the first year of high school - then got to choose what we wanted to do the next year. Education was pretty good - I took pride in my work until I started wagging classes like a dipstick. Was mainly just the older kids for mine - then all my mates had left the year before the final year so I didn't really want to be there.

For Middle School, it was the people around me. Most of them were really rude and my friends just became ruder to me as the school year came to an end. Not to mention the d****heads who made my life miserable for almost every waking moment I had in Middle School. To be fair however, my final year in Middle School was alright. Still, most of my introvertedness and my tendency to not make friends/talk to people came from my experiences in the 6th & 7th grades. Anyone who went through what I experienced would be the same.

For High School, it was generally my fault for the bad marks I got since I didn't invest much time studying and trying to get good marks. I also couldn't really think of anything I wanted to do for a career so that also played a role with me not being interested in school and thus my marks going down.

Here's hoping College will be good when I start in September seeing as I pretty much hated school from 4th grade onwards.

You would think so - Most people would go there because they want to be there to learn whatever..But then again I don't know what it's like where you're from.. Most people in Ausland go to uni after school because they want to keep working on a subject - those who don't either find a trade or try to find a job. People at the university are pretty cool and relaxed- have caught up with a few for a few beers time to time.

i really dont know why people say I hate school

In fact that is your ONLY option which is free/well at some point/ and it can improve your brain. Really Imagine a world where there would be no or at least only that kind of schools which teach you to write and read.

Be happy that your country provides it FREE some counties dont even have basic elementary

True - we are lucky to have the education we get - doesn't mean it's not a hell hole to be in though. People basically have a free right to treat you like s*** in school as compared to the free world they don't.

Yes - some countries have it better than others - doesn't make it right though
